Virtual Teaching Modules

Lucy Calkins and her TCRWP colleagues have created standalone virtual modules to help teachers, parents, and caregivers with the challenging work of supporting students as they develop foundational reading and writing skills.

Each of these new virtual modules includes a collection of short, engaging videos featuring TCRWP Staff Developers speaking directly to learners. The videos provide one-to-one or small group coaching across a range of instructional contexts. Teachers will use them to support small-group work and may also adapt them for whole-class instruction. Parents and caregivers can adapt these videos to enrich children's learning at home and in pods.

Teaching very young children to read when school is virtual, interrupted, or socially distant hasn’t been easy. This series of videos will provide children with some of the companionship and coaching that they need, while also modelling warm, supportive, fun ways that parents and teachers can read side-by-side with children.

In this series of videos, children join a reading partner—a Staff Developer from TCRWP—to work through texts that present progressively greater challenges with decoding, comprehension, and fluency. As the two read together as partners, the Staff Developer coaches the child to gradually take on harder challenges.

Guided Practice: Using Writing to Strengthen Reading & Writing Literary Essays, Grades 3 and Up

Publication Date: January 21, 2021

Do your children sometimes struggle to know how to write notebook entries, or jot meaningful sticky notes in response to the fiction they are reading? Does it sometimes seem that they don’t know what teachers really want when they are asked to write about their reading? And does it sometimes seem—even more significantly—that kids don’t have that much to say about their reading?

In an introductory series of 9 video-lessons, students learn a host of engaging and thoughtful ways to jot responses to their fiction reading. Then, in a second series, students take all the writing and thinking about reading they did in the first, and fashion that writing into a well-structured literary essay. As they do this important work, students deepen their understanding of writing literary essays about texts, and all that this process entails.
